What's New To Eat And Do In Round Rock This Late Summer

What's New To Eat And Do In Round Rock This Late Summer

For years, the honest answer to "where should we grab dinner tonight?" in Round Rock involved a drive south on I-35 and a reservation somewhere in Austin. That answer is quietly changing this summer. Between May and August, a run of owner-operated restaurants with Austin and out-of-state chef pedigrees have opened along the frontage roads and downtown blocks residents already drive every day.

If you live here, the practical shift is small in any given week and meaningful across a year. Fewer forty-minute drives. More reason to invite friends up instead of meeting them down. Here is what has actually landed, what is coming before fall, and the two downtown weekends worth putting on the calendar now.

The Shift, In One Sentence

Round Rock is being chosen by operators who could have opened anywhere in the metro. That is the pattern under the summer's openings, and it is a genuinely new thing. The names arriving are people with options: Scratch Restaurants Group, the Los Angeles group behind Pasta|Bar and Love & Salt, is behind Frank & Margie's with thin-crust pizzas built on Margarita Kallas-Lee's sourdough starter, handmade pastas, appetizers and salads, plus secondi and desserts. That sentence would have read as a typo in a Round Rock roundup two years ago.

The Former Denny's, And What It Says

The most telling address in town right now is 2700 North I-35. That building spent decades as a Denny's. An upscale modern American restaurant has taken root in Round Rock: Grey Orchard, by owner James Sun and chef partner Cole Fitzgerald, started its soft opening phase July 9 at 2700 N. Interstate Hwy. 35.

Fitzgerald is not a random name. The young chef arrived in Austin with Michelin Guide credentials, a "recommended" listing for Atlanta restaurant the White Bull, where he was executive chef, and Fig was a nominee for Best New Restaurant at the 2025 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards. Sun opened Fig with Fitzgerald and brings experience from Eleven Madison Park in New York, among other restaurants.

The menu direction is specific rather than aspirational. Fitzgerald has described it as a modern American restaurant reflecting Asian influence on American "fan-favorites," with items including fried chicken with an Asian dipping sauce and a Vietnamese Bánh mì sandwich with duck confit. During soft opening, reservations were available on OpenTable via greyorchard.com, with hours running 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 3 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The building matters as much as the menu. A former Denny's, on a stretch of I-35 most residents mentally file under "franchise corridor," being taken over by a chef with Michelin recognition is a small piece of information that tells you something bigger about who is now betting on this town.

Pizza With A Name Attached

Frank & Margie's is the second data point that would have been hard to imagine here in 2024. Scratch Restaurants Group is not the kind of operator that lands in a market by accident. Pastry chef Margarita Kallas-Lee's sourdough starter is a working ingredient in the pizza dough, not a marketing line, and the menu extends into handmade pastas, secondi, and desserts.

When a chef-driven pizza room from a Los Angeles group opens in Round Rock the same summer a Slim Chickens takes over a former Zaxby's on Red Bud, the town's dining story has already moved. The chains are still trading spaces on the frontage roads. The interesting trades are happening in strip-center endcaps and food truck bays.

The Everyday Layer, Not The Special-Occasion One

The special-occasion rooms get the headlines. The bigger daily change is the layer underneath, where you feed a family on a Tuesday.

  • Barrio Burrito Bar. The first Texas location opened in mid-May, bringing a fast-casual model with burritos, tacos, bowls, quesadillas and more that can be customized with proteins, toppings and house-made sauces. This location is locally owned by Mikita Mirani.
  • Creasy's BBQ. The food truck locally owned by Ryan and Erica Chody is now open in the Sunset on the 'Rise Food Truck Park.
  • Casita on the Main. A Mexican food restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in downtown Round Rock with breakfast tacos, nachos, menudo, enchiladas, tamales and cheeseburgers, described on its website as a "relaxing environment with great food, soft drinks, tea and coffee." It is the only new restaurant of the six covered in a recent roundup that is not part of a chain. Address: 109 W. Main St., open mornings through evenings most days.
  • Simply Super Indian Cuisine and Bar. Specializes in slow-cooked curries, dosas, crispy pakodis and rice dishes, offering a range of comforting classics to rich regional specialties.
  • Miniso in La Frontera Village. The first Round Rock location of the China-based retailer opened in La Frontera Village in May, known for affordable household goods ranging from stationery to plush toys. Useful when a birthday party sneaks up on you and you do not want to drive to Cedar Park.

Two closures are worth naming so the neighborhood map in your head stays current. 3rd Level Brewing closed in April amid a bankruptcy filing. The brewery was opened in June 2023 by Ross Winner, Clint Bradley and Amy Bradley with a gaming and nerd-culture spin on its interior, and many of the beers on tap were inspired by classic comics and games. And on Red Bud Lane, Slim Chickens is targeting an opening for its Round Rock location at the end of July or early August, in a space formerly home to Zaxby's Chicken Fingers, which closed in June 2026.

What's Coming Before The Leaves Turn

Two projects are in build-out right now and worth watching if you like to be there in the first week.

Casa do Brasil is planning a new location at 4000 E Palm Valley Blvd. in Round Rock. The Brazilian steakhouse will begin construction on June 10 and conclude September 1. The concept is known for its churrasco-style dining experience, where seasoned cuts of meat are slow-roasted over an open flame and carved tableside by gaucho chefs. In addition to its signature meat service, it offers an extensive salad bar featuring fresh vegetables, imported cheeses, cured meats, seafood, soups, and seasonal dishes. The space was formerly occupied by Cork & Barrel Pub, an Irish-inspired gastropub. The restaurant group currently operates four locations across Texas, including restaurants in Austin, College Station, Houston, and Waco.

And in the retail column, a project filing registered in April with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows Nike might open in the Round Rock Premium Outlets later this year, with the retailer potentially spending up to $400,000 to renovate its future tenant space, targeting a late 2026 opening at 4401 N. I-35.

Two Weekends To Block Off Downtown

The city calendar rewards residents who plan a few weekends ahead. Two anchors run this month and into fall.

Event When Where
Round Rock Summer Arts Fest Aug 7 (12–9 p.m.), Aug 8 (9 a.m.–9 p.m.), Aug 9 (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) Downtown Round Rock
Music on Main Street Free concerts, September through November Main Street Plaza, 221 E. Main St.

Round Rock Summer Arts Fest is the city's signature downtown arts event, with festival hours Friday, Aug. 7 from 12 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Downtown Round Rock. Pair it with a walk down Main to Casita, and you have a Saturday that does not require a car after breakfast.

Once the calendar tips into fall, Music on Main Street is a free concert series that runs throughout September through November at the Main Street Plaza stage, with food vendors on hand, at 221 East Main Street. This is the kind of programming that quietly does more for a downtown than any single restaurant opening. It builds the habit of showing up.

Why Any Of This Matters If You Already Live Here

Restaurants of this caliber tend to open where operators expect the neighborhood to keep showing up. That is a vote from people whose job is reading rooms for a living, and it is worth paying attention to as a resident, whether you plan to move anytime soon or not. When a Michelin-recognized chef signs a lease at a former Denny's on your commute, and a Los Angeles restaurant group brings its pastry program to a Round Rock endcap, you are watching your ten-minute radius get materially more interesting.

The practical reader move for August and September: try Grey Orchard on a weeknight before the full opening buzz peaks, walk to Casita on the Main before or after Summer Arts Fest, and keep an eye on E Palm Valley for the Casa do Brasil sign to go up. That is a full month of new dinners without ever getting on 35 going south.
